Just Shapes & Beats

Just Shapes & Beats is a rhythm game where you never attack anything. You are a small blue square, everything on screen is trying to touch you, and all of it moves in time with the music. That's it, and it's exhilarating.

The soundtrack does the heavy lifting - a licensed chiptune and electronic set from artists like Danimal Cannon, Chipzel and Sabrepulse. Because the attacks are choreographed to the beat, learning a level feels less like memorising patterns and more like learning a song well enough to dance through it.

The visual language is stripped to essentials. Pink means it will hurt you. Blue means it's you. Everything is neon on black, pulsing on the downbeat, and the boss fights escalate until the screen is almost entirely pink and you're somehow still alive.

There's also a genuinely affecting story told with no dialogue whatsoever, which is not something most people expect going in.

This collection captures the neon geometry and boss shapes that define the game. Fitting for a desktop that could stand to look a bit louder.
